Inspiralis invests in new fermentation bioreactors to support growth in UK enzyme manufacturing
Inspiralis Limited, a specialist molecular biology enzyme manufacturer based at Norwich Research Park, has invested in a new suite of fermentation bioreactors to increase its production capacity and support future growth in bulk enzyme supply.
The project is part-funded by Norfolk County Council through the Business Growth Fund and will help Inspiralis move further from small-scale production towards a more efficient, controlled fermentation-based manufacturing process. The investment will provide the company with greater flexibility across different production scales, enabling smaller process optimisation runs alongside larger batch production once the equipment has been commissioned.
Inspiralis supplies molecular biology enzymes used in life science research, drug discovery and manufacturing supply chains. As demand grows for reliable, UK-based enzyme production, the new fermentation capacity will help the company improve turnaround times, increase batch sizes, improve process consistency and support export opportunities.
The revised equipment package will provide Inspiralis with a total nominal fermentation capacity of 70 litres. This includes a flexible mix of smaller and larger fermentation vessels, allowing the company to test, optimise and run processes in parallel while also supporting higher-volume production requirements.

The new bioreactors will allow Inspiralis to better match production scale to customer requirements, from smaller development and optimisation runs through to larger batch production. Once commissioned, the system will support a more efficient workflow, reduce reliance on multiple small-scale processes and help the company respond more effectively to customer demand.
The investment also supports Inspiralis’ longer-term plans to expand its enzyme manufacturing capabilities, with further developments coming soon.
